  • 90% of all adults with drug or alcohol problems started using before the age of 18 and half before 15.


  • Up to 50% of all felony prosecutions in Kern County include methamphetamine offenses.


  • Approx 42% of substance abuse treatment admissions are for meth related disorders.


  • Parents are the most effective resource in preventing and reducing substance use.

Vaping Facts

  • E-cigarettes entered the U.S. marketplace around 2007 and since 2014, they have been the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S youth.


  • The two most common types of e-cigarettes used by youth are prefilled pods or cartridges and disposables.


  • About 3.6 million U.S. youth reported current e-cigarette use in 2020.


  • In 2020 more than 3.6 million youth, including 1 in 5 high school students currently use e-cigarettes daily.

Risk Factors

  • Lack of purpose
  • Boredom
  • Ease their pain

  • Low grades or fear of failure
  • Victim of bullying or cyberbullying
  • Low self-esteem
  • Permissive parenting

  • Lack of knowlede of substance use risks.

  • Nicotine is extremely poisonous.
  • A lethal dose for an average adult is 30-60 mg of nicotine (a drop of pure nicotine in liquid form) and as small as 10 mg in children.


  • Using nicotine in adolescence can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control.

The Risk

  • Deaths from drug overdoses rose nearly 30% to the highest overdose deaths ever recorded, 93,000 in 2020.
  • According to the Kern County Coroner's Office there was more than a 30% increase in overdose deaths between 2020-2021.
  • As of November 16, 2021, the Kern County Coroner’s Division reports that out of 201 drug overdoses in 2021, 40 were due to Fentanyl and 161 were other substances mixed with Fentanyl. 6 deaths were minors.
